Travel Resolution #8 :: Always Carry $1s

travel resolutions always carry one dollar billsEven though I already made my travel resolutions for 2010, who says you can't add to them throughout the year?  Based on recent experience, my newest 2010 travel resolution is: Thou Shalt Always Travel with Multiple US One Dollar Bills. I know, I know, I'm Canadian, but it's not like the rest of the world appreciates the loonie and twoonie like I do.  Maybe one day they will?

Now I'm not planning on being a walking bank with a wad of ones protruding from my pocket, but, carrying enough ones for all the seen and unforeseen times a tip is required is my new travel declaration.

The mental news flash leading to this resolution occurred on a recent trip to Jamaica when I only had seven $1s in my possession, and knew I'd need more.   It reminded me how easy it would have been to go the bank either before my trip OR at various intervals throughout the year in order to accumulate $1s for travel.   Second time's a charm?  Another  similar experience I had was sitting in a rental car shuttle bus back to Kahului Airport (OGG).  On the ride, I realized I didn't have any ones left; all I had was a twoonie.  Knowing that the Canadian and US dollar were pretty much on-par at that point, I handed over my twoonie as a thanks for the two-min ride.  The driver was gracious, but I know he thought I was 'out to lunch.'  Better something than nothing?  Not so much.  Appears people aren't so big on coins.

On vacation one's mind tends to rest--I know mine does.  With this in mind, I vow to let it rest while away and take 10 mins before I leave to go to the bank and make sure I have enough $1s a)so I'm never in a lurch and b)to thank people for their service 100% of the time.

Getting the Best Travel Deals via Twitter

[trip style = budget]

Most savvy hotels and online travel agencies are now on twitter.  Are you?  If you're a saavy traveller who likes learning about offers, deals, promotions and contests, then get on the bandwagon and follow your fave companies on Twitter.  It'll be worth your while.

Travel tweeting has become so popular that travel providers are now doing twitter-only specials. Some of the best twitter travel promotions I've seen lately are from: @hawaiianfares promoting discounts @fairmontwhistlr promoting a "twinter twitter package" @applevacations promoting "Bermuda 50% off" @kayak $39+ (99 hours only) CheapCaribbean.com anniversary celebration http://bit.ly/bwoe8p

Yet Twitter isn't only about deals and offers, it's also about information.  Many airlines now post flight delays, humanitarian efforts, responses to travelers' questions, as well as tidbits of info. Yesterday @fairmonthotels informed its 7200 followers that US Presidents Obama, Bush, Carter, Clinton, Ford, Johnson, Kennedy, Reagan, Taft, Truman have all stayed at the Fairmont San Fran. Interesting.

How to Get the Best Travel Deals on Twitter

  • sign-up for a twitter account
  • follow your fave travel companies
    • easiest way:  find a travel company you like with a significant twitter presence and browse through their listings to decide who you want to follow
  • be flexible and ready to act
  • many deals are time-sensitive, so check your feed frequently
    • if you are now worried that this whole 'twitter thing' sounds like too much work, don't worry, being an active observer on twitter doesn't take more than 5 mins a day, scanning your feed in five minute increments throughout the day
  • for a more personal experience, interact with the hotel or tour company
    • when you sign-up for a twitter account, you don't have to tweet, but to gain a more in-depth rapport with your travel companies of choice, consider tweeting.  ex: if you've just flown to Australia with Virgin and had a great experience, tell them!

2010 Travel Resolutions

2010 travel resolutions Happy New Year!  I'm a big fan of New Years Resolutions. In my life they have provided the opportunity to goal-set and maintain focus. Don't get me wrong, I've also had those resolutions which go nowhere, like workout 5 days a week no matter what, or eat salad everyday---both doable but not necessarily achievable every.single.day. So, this year I resolve to make REALISTIC travel resolutions.

Pack Lighter My desire to pack lighter has always been 'a desire.' This year, I want to turn it into a full-on resolution, not a '2 steps forward, one step back' type of thing. Looking back, I had glimmers of hope this year. I went to Napa for 6 days with just a carry-on, it wasn't difficult, even with a little shopping in San Francisco. The only sad part is that I wasn't able to bring back any wine due to the limited liquids carry-on rule. Oh well, there's always shipping. I took two steps back when I went to Europe and Africa in one trip. Packing for so many different climates threw me for a loop and sent my packing methods into my teenage angst bring everything phase. This was really dumb since we were on the move every 2-3 days. I've learned my lesson. I promise. 2011 Update - Every trip I did in 2010 was with my carry-on, including a two week adventure exploring eastern Canada and the Maritimes!

Take Another Last-Minute Getaway Jetsetting somewhere tropical for the weekend has always been a HUGE excitement/goal of mine. I was lucky enough to achieve it in 2009, going to Maui for an extended weekend. Since it was such a positive experience, I resolve to do it again. If this idea sounds good to you, here's how. 2011 Update - I'm addicted. All throughout the year I did extended weekend trips to destinations like Palm Springs, Scottsdale, Portland and most recently for 3 days to Maui.

Travel Credit Card with Lounge access Although I love my travel rewards credit card and have booked many-a-trip with the points, I realize there's a flaw: it doesn't have an Airline Lounge Access component. Looking into it recently, I found that I get a discount to Priority Pass. Depending on how much I travel this year, a Priority Pass membership might be in my near future. 2011 Update - Haven't got a Priority Pass yet, but still hoping to!

Be Smarter About Amassing Points with ONE Airline and ONE Hotel Group This year I made bigger strides forward in this arena, but admittedly, I still have a long way to go. I resolve not to just book the cheapest flight, but to book flights and hotel stays (still within a reasonable price range) which match the major airlines and hotel groups with which I collect points. For some travellers, this is an easy task, for the web-savvy, price-conscious, mid-to-high-end travel shoppers, this is a more difficult.  Either way, I'm up to the challenge. 2011 Update - Have continued to be diligent about collecting airline and hotel points, and booked a few trips and hotel upgrades with points. Who doesn't love free travel?

Sort Through My Airline Points This year I started sorting through all my airline memberships and categorized each membership and the points to date in a spreadsheet. I know, pretty organized, yet perhaps a little old-school. This next year, I want to take this to the next level by deciding which airline loyal program memberships make the most sense (given where I travel, where my home airport is and how I like to travel) and then gift the rest of the points! 2011 Update - Done and done, and now I have an app for that!

Go to Australia!!!!! Here is what beckons me in Australia: snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef, taking a harbour tour in Sydney, navigating Fraser Island, embarking on a sailing tour of the Whitsundays and so much more. This is my year to go to Australia....I hope! 2011 Update - Australia is the trip that I keep meaning to take, then something comes up. This will hopefully change in 2011, with a tentatively planned trip Down Under in the spring!

Go on the Oasis of the Seas I had my first taste of the flowrider (and on-ship surfing and body boarding simulator) on Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas and I've been longing to go back ever since. Just this year, they came out with a new, bigger and more impressive ship: The Oasis of the Seas featuring dual flowriders, a zip line, aqua amphitheater and all the other activities normally featured on Royal Carribean's ships. 2011 Update - After The Oasis launched, its equally impressive sister ship The Allure came out in December. I can't wait to try both, but didn't get a chance in 2010. Hopefully, I'll set sail on one of these mega ships in 2011.

Merry Christmas

Today I'm thankful...- that i can dream - that i have hope - that i can let my mind go wild thinking about travel - that i can write about what I love

As I reflect on how lucky we are to even dream of visiting other lands, let us not lose sight of the many blessings we each have. And not just 'remember' those without hope, but take action--whether doing something grass-roots locally, nationally or internationally.

Having had the opportunity of doing development work opened my eyes to the world's need---beyond what we see and don't see in the news. Poverty became more than just a word and a problem; it became a name, a person, a life.

See for yourself.  This next year, why not consider using some vacation towards a cross-cultural humanitarian adventure building houses with Habitat or doing relief work with Red Cross. I plan on it too, and look forward to adopting a village through FH Canada.

Stuck in the Airport? Good iPod Game

Dear @nickbilton @bryce @arainert, sorry if I just shattered your leaderboard aspirations... With all the delayed flights in Europe, I suspect more than the usual amount of people will be stranded or delayed this holiday season.  It's a thought that makes me sick --especially after having it experienced it myself.

Other than reading books and magazines, listening to music/podcasts, eating and cat-napping,  I enjoy passing travel time & delays with my fave games for my ipod touch.  Yes, I have a touch because I am currently a blackberry user.

Although playing flight control while you travel may seem a little ironic or ominous, it is one of very few games that can hold my attention.  The objective is to land planes and helicopters--travelling at different speeds and coming from every direction--on a series of different runways.

Happy Landings.
