Weekend Getaway

Top 10 Travel Essentials :: Fall Weekend Edition

[trip style = weekend getaway]

Shopping for fall hasn't been this fun since back-to-school, when my list of essentials included a Club Monaco logo sweatshirt {which they should really bring back for nostalgia}, a mini tee and a lace choker {proof that some trends should stay in the past}.

Our fall 2014 travel essentials are less trend and more casual-sophisticate. This list takes all the guesswork out of packing for a weekend getaway. We selected staples that never lose their luster, like a classic trench, white sneakers and this season's all-star denim pickthe cropped, relaxed-fit boyfriend jean you can carry with you from Montreal to Miami.

GUYS :: Your fall essentials include all of the same items, save the dress and the skirt {sorry Scotland and Marc Jacobsdespite your bravest efforts, the man skirt is still not happening}.

Oregon Travel Diary :: Cannon Beach

CannonBeach

[trip style = beach + weekend getaway + food + wine]

Long ago, Cannon Beach surpassed drive-by beach town. Punctuated by the 235-foot Haystack Rock, a sandbar long enough to run a 100-meter dash and wispy grasses separating sand from land, it's become Oregon's most iconicand photographedcoastline.

It's also conquerable, reaching 6.4 km {4 miles} from end-to-end. Pan the waterfront and you'll see dogs romping around like they're on a highway to heaven, surfers trying their hand at wave-riding, runners burning off last night's calories, walkers getting a beach-wind blow-out, horseback riders galloping on the sandbar and reclined beach trikes zipping past. Somehow, this chaos works {and feels far from congested because the beach is so big, there's an imaginary "track" for every sand-lover}.

When I visited with Mr. Trip Styler and Mr. Nacho King in late-August, we traded our regular repertoire of surfing and running for picnics and bonfires. Here are the on- and off-the-shore treasures I suggest you add to your beach-combing basket.

Trip Styler Tip: Cannon Beach is warmest in summer, but moonlights as a four-season destination {if you can handle bundling up}! Visit in the off-season to find fewer crowds and cheaper rates.

Dog Styler: Have Pup Will Travel

DogStyler

[trip style = glamping + luxe + urban + weekend getaway]

In my mini family of 2.5, the .5 is my furry wonderdog, Mr. Nacho King, whom Mr. Trip Styler and I adopted from a Washington State county animal shelter seven years ago. When I found him online I knew we had to be together. When I met him face-to-face it was kismet: I cried and he peed his fur-pants {pictured below}.

I don't talk about "Dog Styler" much on TS, yet he deserves more lip servicejust don't get too close, his breath smells like the beach at low tideas he's one of the most trip styled pups on the block. Case in point: he has more Instagram followers than I do!

As an important member of the Trip Styler clan, Mr. Nacho King does not stay at home every time we escape the roost. Au contraire; he accompanies us on all local getaways, though he leaves the jumbo jet travel to his parents because he'd rather eat spinach drenched in lemon juice than fly.

Like a true trip stylin' sidekick, Nacho lives the dream traveling once every two weeks. And while his human owners love a styled stay complete with a cushy bed and a panoramic vista, he prefers a cool bathroom floor to sleep onCarrara marble, preferablyand hotel staff who dole out dog treats when he glances their way. Bonus points go to dog-friendly accommodations with a bacon or salmon scent wafting toward his nose.

For some dog-sight into how we've fairly effortlessly incorporated Nacho into our nearby jaunts without sacrificing our regular repertoire of cool hotels, it restaurants and boutique shopping, check out the recent article I wrote in the Expedia Viewfinder chronicling some have-pup-will-travel tips, and our recent road trip to San Francisco.

PS: Later this week Nacho's tagging along on a beach trek we're taking down the Oregon Coast. Follow along via Instagram: Trip Styler // Mr. Nacho King

Beach Reads

[trip style = beach + sun + weekend getaway]

When I wasn't busy biking to the corner store for 5-cent candies, running under sprinklers, or choreographing dances to Ace of Base's "The Sign" and Boyz II Men's "Motown Philly", I spent my childhood summers checking out books to earn as many stickers as possible from the public library's annual summer reading club. Fast forward 20 years and I'm still spending my summers wading through stacks of unread books.

Since nothing complements a beach trip like a page-turner, here are three hilarious memoirs you'll want to pack in your beach bag this summer. They're funny, not too serious, entertaining, self deprecating and witty. Everything I want in a summer relationship—with reading. Just don't forget to pack some extra SPF because these books will have you sobbing through your sunscreen with tears of laughter.

Uganda Be Kidding Me
Chelsea Handler's comical collection of travel stories is by far and wide the most irreverent and belly-busting memoir I've ever read. While reading it, I may have peed my pants from the pressure of heaving laughter, skipped the gym because my abs got such a workout, and drawn way too much attention to myself when I burst out crying from sustained giggling because of scenes like Chelsea's sudden urge to deal with a bout of post-Africa constipation in a kayak in the Bahamas. To give you an idea of how much I loved this book, I ordered every single one of her books from Amazon before I'd even finished this one.  –Recommended by Trish

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)
Mindy Kaling kicks off her book with a list of alternate titles that include: So You've Just Finished Chelsea Handler's Book, Now What? and Harry Potter Secret Book #8. I was either the best or worst beach buddy while reading this book, depending on whether you liked to be interrupted and read to whenever I came across something hilarious I had to share, which was basically all the time. Whether it was her stories about growing up as a "timid chubster" in Massachusetts or her thoughts on best friend rights and responsibilities, she had me laughing the whole time and wishing she was my best friend, even if that means getting punched in the nose. Read the book to find out how that happens—and how it involves Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. –Recommended by Heather

Everything Is Perfect When You're a Liar
If you've never heard of Kelly Oxford, you're probably not on Twitter, where she reigns as queen with her irreverent, observational tweets. Once a Calgary stay-at-home mother of three, she's now moved her family to Los Angeles, where she hangs out with her celebrity best friends and works as a screenwriter. No topics are off limits in her first memoir, where she shares her most embarrassing stories about mall modeling, teenage drinking, flying to LA to make Leonardo DiCaprio her boyfriend, and cancelling on brunch with David Copperfield in Vegas after a crazy night at the Hustler Club. I think Lena Dunham describes Kelly best on the book jacket: "Kelly Oxford is like your cool babysitter who teaches you about sex and sarcasm in an un-creepy way." –Recommended by Heather

I'm next in line for Uganda Be Kidding Me after Mr. Trip Styler finishes it, and after lending it to at least three people, I finally plan on reading Tina Fey's Bossy Pants next month or whenever I make it to the beach.

Fresh and Foraged on the Sunshine Coast

PaintedBoatTheRestaurant

[trip style = food & wine + weekend getaway]

On a recent trip style = weekend getaway on BC's Sunshine Coastone of the most gorgeous stretches of coastline in CanadaI was taken by a food tale I had to tell.

It's not everyday you eat so local that your food is sourced from the nearby forest and ocean floor.

Every year between May and September, THE Restaurant at Painted Boat Resorta hotel we recently featured in our Roam+Board seriesopens its ocean-facing doors to the landlubbing and seafaring public. {While you can reach THE Restaurant by car or foot, you can also paddle or sail upto its deep-water marina and stop in for dinner.} Carved into the water's edge and suspended over a secluded cove, the sunset views rival some of the most sultry skies I've seen in my travels.

Though this savory stunner is more than just a fabulous facade. It has substance too. With deep ties to local suppliers like the butcher five minutes away, a nearby organic produce farm and BC-caught Ocean Wise* seafood, Head Chef Michael Riley doesn't just wax on about sourcing close-by cuisine because it's de rigueur or it looks good in his bio. For him, fresh is best and he has the foraging know-all to prove it.

*Ocean Wise is a designation given to fish caught in local waters via ethical and sustainable practices.

Mirroring the coast's tradition of "getting out of the city and getting back to the land", Chef is an outdoorsy guy whose regular kayak excursions and hikes pair well with his culinary skills. Curious about foragingsomething I've never done though free food is literally in my backyard—I accompanied him on a tranquil mission in search of sea asparagus sprouting from the ocean floor. We not only found it and cut a small bounty with kitchen scissors, we ate a few sea-salted sprigs right off the beach while doing so.

Oyster mushrooms were also in season, so en route home we stopped by a nondescript trail barely visible from the main road. Less than 500 meters into the woods, his eagle eyes spotted the right kind of mushroom. Truth be told: while snipping the foraged fungus off the trees, the urbanite in me had a quick and silent freak out wondering if we were somehow picking the right mushroom. Michael immediately calmed my fears, telling me the exact shape he was looking for, including its color, texture and age characteristics. Freak out averted.

While you won't spot oyster mushrooms or sea asparagus on the main dish list at THE Restaurant, you will see the latest foraged find as a menu accoutrement. And while basking in the end-of-day glow with a glass of BC wine and spot prawns caught in the surrounding sea, you'll be tempted to stage a sit-in and eat all night long.
