Weekend Getaway

TS's Experience Whistler :: F&B

[trip style = ski + weekend getaway + sightseeing]

{Editor’s Note: Until noon PST today, enter to win two nights at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler and two Scandinave Spa Whistler bath passes. Takes less than one minute to enter. Good luck!}

----------------------- After ziptrekking at 80km/h over Fitzsimmons Creek and dipping into therapeutic waters in the name of Nordic wellness, we've worked up an appetite. In the last of a three-part Experience Whistler series, exploring the resort's food and beverage marvels should fit the bill {pun intended}! -----------------------

Whether it's an intimate affair or big bash, there's a fete happening in every bar, lounge and restaurant in Whistler. It's a resort; festivities come with the territory. Beyond Whistler's world-class cocktails and cuisine, here are some unique experiences perfect for epic or everyday celebrations!

Bubbly Why pop the bubbly when you can saber it like Napoleon? You and your party are ushered down a narrow stairway to a 20,000 bottle wine cellar to strike the 'lip' off the bottle of Champagne with the blunt edge of a sword! Where: Bearfoot Bistro Cost: There is no fee for this, just buy a bottle of Champagne or sparkling wine {which start at $50} and request to saber it!

Take Flight Don a $1,000 Canada Goose down parka and fur hat with ear flaps, and step into an arctic chill known as the Belvedere Ice Room. With 50 vodkas from around the world, the petite ice bar plays host to flights in a -18 degrees Celsius room! Bring gloves. Where: Bearfoot Bistro Cost: One shot is $20, a flight {4 shots} is $48.

Nitro As you can probably tell from the last two experiences at one of Whistler's finest and highly acclaimed restaurants, the Bearfoot Bistro is as much about the food and beverage as it is about the show. For those who like a sweet and frosty finish to their meal, complete the culinary adventure with a simple, yet flashy dessert. A wooden trolly arrives bearing the gift of cream, sugar and nitroglycerine. Churned right in front of you, this high-end take on build-your-own sunday dazzles the eyes and delights the sweet tooth. Where: Bearfoot Bistro Cost: $15 per person, minimum two people.

Lounge Hands down, one of Whistler's favourite spots for après-ski and après-dinner is the Mallard Lounge. Anchored by an oversized fireplace stretching into vaulted ceilings, this open-concept lounge is ski- meets hunting-lodge chic. Weekend entertainment {Thurs - Sun in high season} only adds to the atmosphere. All the artists are excellent. Ask if Colin Bullock is playing; his medleys of popular Coldplay and Tracy Chapman songs, as well as his own singer-songwriter tunes will turn you into a night owl. Where: Fairmont Chateau Whistler Cost: A single malt and glass of wine start at $10.

{Trip Styler Tip :: Don't miss out on Fairmont Fridays, $5 beers and cocktails await. And with the help of Fairmont's exec chef and sommelier, learn to cook the quintessential festive meal and select the best wine pairings for Holiday Cooking 101 (nov 18 - 20).}

Crêpe Crêpe Montagne is a small French crêperie tucked away near Whistler's Celebration Plaza. The crêpes are as authentic and delicate as the design with fresh flowers on every table and bright blue banquette seating. Visit during the holidays when the bistro sparkles. A giant branch towers over guests with gazillions of silver bobbles catching the dim winter light from every twig. Where: Crêpe Montagne Cost: Crêpes start at $5. Open breakfast, lunch and dinner. Don't miss the fondue and raclette!

{Trip Styler Tip ::  Avoid the midday cafeteria rush while skiing Whistler Blackcomb and overlook the ski-scape below with full service dining at Christine's.}

Tech Tuesday :: Urban Dig

[trip style = urban + weekend getaway]

One of 2011's biggest travel buzzwords is curated: curated travel flash sales, curated restaurant picks, curated hotel lists. Every online travel site and guidebook have some sort of curated list. Buzzed about or not, the process of creating a niche product, then choosing a small number of hotels, restaurants or activities saves everyone time with immediate hot-spot detection---and I'm not talking wifi!

One urban city guide app that just launched is doing just that: curated lists in cool cities. UrbanDig is a Vancouver start-up with off-track lists---think truckspotting instead of Eat, or hidden art instead of To Do---aimed at the generation X and Y set {or super cool boomers!}.

How it Works When you first download the free app, you have to sign-up. With an almost mandatory social sharing component, it'll ask you to add a picture to your profile so you can follow and be followed. Two-minute sign-up process aside, it's the local picks for Vancouver, LA, NY, Portland and SF {with Austin, DC and Chicago coming soon} that are the app's version fall 2011 ladies booties and mens wingtips!

If you're an urban culture cat, this app's for you.

The Savvy Traveler :: Rachel

[trip style = sun + weekend getaway + luxury]

Rachel is passionate about packing right and bringing the most stylish and apropos ensembles for every trip style. As a freelance fashion writer who has graced the pages of publications like Seventeen.com and Thehuffingtonpost.com, she comes by this obsession naturally. We knew she was The Savvy Traveler's go-to gal for jetsetting in style when we read this: "all the packing advice I came across online was generic and formulaic – not at all the whimsical glimpse into stylish global attire I was hoping for." So she fixed the problem when she started her blog, Suitcase Secrets, where she documents her packing techniques and lists each time she jetsets near and far.

1/ What are your top 3 trip styles and why?
[trip style = sun + weekend getaway + luxury] I love my home in NYC and think it’s one of the greatest cities in the world, but I get antsy if I don’t head out of town every couple of weeks. Even if it’s just for a couple of days, I love exploring new places and stepping away from my daily routine. Whether it’s trip style = wine touring in Napa to quench my food and wine cravings, trip style = weekending at the W Hotel in Miami for some fun in the sun, or a romantic trip style = luxury getaway to Paris, where my boyfriend and I can stroll through the streets all day and night, traveling is a true treat for me. And when I get to plan an extended trip, it’s even better! I’m off to Italy in a few weeks, and we’re pulling out all the stops to make it a dream trip—first class flights, five star hotels, food and wine tours galore. It’s going to be unreal.

2/ What items are always on your packing list?
I obviously put a lot of thought into each and every suitcase I pack, but some items are so versatile, I never leave home without them. These include:

  • Oversized Jee Vice sunglasses
  • A pair of skinny jeans from James
  • A Tolani scarf
  • Intelligent Nutrients bug repelling perfume
  • Evian spray
  • My laptop and camera
  • Goody hair ties and clips
  • A pair of Havaiana flip flops

3/ Essential travel gadget or app?
It’s a toss-up between my computer and camera. As a blogger, I love to document my journeys, and I enjoy looking back on photos from past trips to keep the memories fresh. I also try to stay very connected—the last time I was without my laptop was in South Africa. It was liberating, but also took a lot of adjusting!

4/ Hotel or destination that’s on your radar and why?
I’m normally dying to get to Europe, and have been desperate to go to the south of France for ages, except the timing never seems to work out. Right now I’m really fascinated with staying at the Sofitel Cartagena in Columbia. Between the festive culture, restored colonial mansions and exotic cuisine, I’m pretty excited to check it out. On the other hand, my boyfriend really wants to go to Papua New Guinea. We’ll see which one happens first...

5/ Best trip you've ever taken?
The best trip I’ve ever taken was to St. Lucia and Anguilla back in February. We stayed at Cap Juluca in Anguilla for four nights, and felt so lucky to be able to step out of our suite and straight onto the beautiful white beach. And St. Lucia was seriously magical—we had a breathtaking “sanctuary” with our own private plunge pool at Jade Mountain. There’s no fourth wall in your room, and the views are like nothing you’ve ever seen in your life. Plus, the service was truly extraordinary. I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming!

6/ What are your best practices for packing quickly?
While sometimes packing quickly can be necessary, I actually prefer to spend a bit more time prepping, so I don’t have to stress about what to wear once the trip is underway. Sometimes I try on outfit possibilities and photograph things I like, so I can slip them on exactly as-is once I get to my destination. I also suggest packing wardrobe pieces you wear often and love. It’s great to add in new items or extra special garments as well, and if you bring a bunch of go-to basics, you’ll end up with a ton of options during your trip.

Tech Tuesday :: Hotel Tonight

[trip style = weekend getaway + budget conscious] If you travel to or within the US and like to A} save on hotel stays and/or B} procrastinate, then you need to know about this travel app. Its name pretty much sums it up. Hotel Tonight allows users to book hotels at the last minute---after 12pm to be exact---for that evening until 2am. Some hotels can be booked for one night, others will allow a five-night stay.

Hotel Tonight came about in late 2010, but I've been waiting to feature it until the functionality, number of cities and offers were robust enough to make it worthy of your screen's precious space. This is now and the app holds a permanent position in my iPhone's travel folder.

With 22 cities and counting, Hotel Tonight offers three hotels per city unless it's a large and/or major vacation destination like New York or San Francisco, in which case there will be three hotels per "area." Each hotel is categorized as hip, modern, elegant, classic, boutique or basic and includes the price after tax as well as photos, a map and info {essentially, a short review written in bullet points for the time-starved, spontaneous booking!}. If you think the last-minute savings will only be offered on tired, 2-star airport hotels, think again. Even 4-star hotels need to fill space.

Are the eleventh hour savings actually cheaper than Kayak, Expedia or Hotwire? Would Trip Styler's editorial team use it? Yes and yes. On Saturday I played around with a few cities and compared Hotel Tonight's prices to other major online travel agencies, and in every case Hotel Tonight's prices were better. The best part: it's not even a blind booking scenario, you know what you're going to get and don't have to scroll through a zillion hotels to decide which one you're going to book. FYI, book early on weekends, as in, between noon and 4pm, because deals can sell out.

We love this free app so much that we've added it to Trip Styler Recommends.
