Top 5 vacation rental sites (photo via airbnb)

[trip style = budget or lux]

Renting a vacation homeor holiday home as our European friends call itis an immersive experience. By sheer virtue of staying in a home, villa, condo or flat, you delve into your destination's beat, saying adios to hotel culture and hola to local culture.

I've rented about five vacation homes over the past few years, and it's a trip style I enjoy. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE staying at hotels, but by escaping the destination's hotel bubble, suddenly you're living in someone else's shoes, shopping where they do, eating what they do and doing what they do. That's the beauty of a vacation home; you can live like a local or spend a night or two cooking and doing the things you'd do at home. Your choice. Either way, here are five holiday home rentals sites that should be on your vacation rental radar.

5 Vacation Home Rentals Sites

Bonus: I love the instant book feature, which practically eliminates the need for a host to manually OK the booking.

Trip Styler Hotel Reviews

Trip Styler's hotel reviewsIt's always nice to know if a friend or someone you trust, liked or disliked a hotel you're thinking of visiting. This way, you know if it's worth the visit, mirrors your preferred trip style, or is the perceived value you're seeking.

Beyond the free travel tips and hints provided at Trip Styler, over the past two years, we've also been working behind the scenes to meticulously review 60+ hotels---all of which are recent, not reviews from 4 years ago. Given we don't regularly post about the specifics of our hotels stays, we wanted to let you know we're always doing reviews with your future stay in mind.

Aside from the current list below, you can easily access the constantly updated hotel list by clicking on the Trip Advisor icon at the top right of the site!

Top 3 Hotels & Why Sorobon Beach Resort, Bonaire [review] Why? "To describe Sorobon Beach resort as ‘basic beachfront bliss’ doesn't even do it justice. The warm staff and well-kept facilities make it feel as though you’re visiting your friend’s island outpost where there are only a few orders to the day: hot beach, cool dip, snooze under palapa, watch geckos scurrying around; repeat."

Fairmont Mara Safari Club, Kenya [review] Why? "The scenery you see in the Mara is like you are watching a National Geographic high-def program, but it's real, and you're part of the show! Coupled with the luxury rooms and service at the Mara Safari Club, this trip was one of the highlights of my travel experiences!"

Wilson Island, Australia [review] Why? "Picture a place where fine wines mingle with coral sand, gourmet fare compliments shabby island-chic decor and each morning you wake up looking out toward an ocean that sparkles. Wilson is an eco-retreat that’s worth the splurge. With only 6 tents and an off-the-grid feel, the Island is the perfect host to the traveler who wants an idyllic Swiss Family Robinson retreat with extra, thoughtful perks like a champagne at sundown with fine cheese, crudites and crackers."

My Go-To Travel Sites 2010

2010 go-to travel sitesPeople often ask me about my go-to sites for booking travel. Ask and you shall receive---perhaps more than you bargained for. Here are my not-so-secret, preferred travel sites divided into categories so you can refer back to this page when you're planning your next jaunt abroad.

There are thousands of travel sites that do a thousand things, but, the below candidates are the clear and simple 'winners' as far as offering a great user experience and good prices. Let me know if there's a site or category you'd add.

Bon voyage!

Best 2010 Travel Sites & Apps All Round Kayak - One of the world's largest travel meta search engines. {app} ITA Software - The site that powers other travel sites like Kayak, Orbitz, etc... {app}

Flights In addition to always checking the sites listed above for flights, for routes I know well, I book through an airline directly, otherwise: DoHop SkyScanner HipMunk Allegiant - For short-haul trips out of Vancouver or Seattle. See my best practices for booking with Allegiant here. Seatguru.com - Find out the best seat on the plane, before you fly!

Hotels Kayak {Best for North America} Booking.com {Best for Europe and Australia} Opodod {Best for Europe}

Cars I'm not too picky about what car I drive, so I usually book my rental vehicles via discount travel sites (below) or the rental agency direct.

Discount Travel Sites Hotwire Priceline

All-Inclusive iTravel2000.com AirCanadaVacations.com WestJetVacations.com Cheap Caribbean Apple Vacations {USA}

Cruise Vacations To Go - A great place to find excellent cruises from most major and boutique lines in one place. Check out what's available in the short-term with their 90-Day Ticker. CruisesOnly - USA's largest cruise agency. RepositioningCruise.com - A great place to find cruises with interesting and off-beat itineraries in the off-season.

Luxury Travel Jetsetter - The Gilt Group's foray into travel... {join here} Vacationist - A joint-venture between Travel + Leisure Magazine and LuxuryLink.com. {join here}

Best Travel Review Site Trip Advisor {see all my trip advisor reviews here}

Vacation Rentals VRBO - Large vacation rental site with large presence in Canada and the US. AirBnB - Vacation rentals, private rooms and sublets.

Itinerary Planning/Management TripIt - Organizes all your travels plans into one intuitive list {app}.

Ones to Watch TripAlertz.com - The Groupon of travel. Kayak Explore - Love the visual flight search concept, and don't think it's been given enough credit.

Note You may be wondering why I'm not featuring Expedia or Travelocity in the above list. Though I've booked multiple hotel room stays with both of these travel suppliers, I usually---but not always---find better prices elsewhere. If you do plan on booking through one of these sites, compare and contrast the hotel you're looking at on both sites, as well as on the Canadian and US versions. Sometimes the price difference is minor, and sometimes it is major.

Travel Trends :: Groupon-esque Travel

groupon travel tripalertz[trip style = budget conscious]

Coupons are making a comeback. But in 2010 and via web 2.0, they look a little different. They are virtual (until you print them out), viral and group-buying focused, as in, if a deal gets shared enough and people buy it, everyone gets to indulge.

The Groupon Craze We all know Groupon is hot right now, businesses from cooking schools to Fairmont Hotels have been jumping on board to entice consumers with savings, which they hope will bring them regular customers. Playing off the coupon and social networking trend, there's a groupon-like travel website launching next week. My prediction, it's going to be BIG.

New Kid in Town TripAlertz is an online travel community where prices go down as bookings go up. Not a bad formula. This US-based website is free to use and takes seconds to join. Unlike Groupon, you don't have to unlock a deal, rather you can purchase it for a limited time. The more people purchase, the greater the savings. In the website's launch phase, most of the deals appear to be Florida-based, but as the site expands, they plan on expanding worldwide.

Travel Sharing = Travel Savings This social-buying travel site puts a whole new spin on group travel. Yes, it offers the same type of discounts as the Pricelines and Hotwires of the world, but it does so transparently, in a way that depends upon social sharing. Therefore, if you see a hotel deal you like, you can a) indulge on your own, or b) share it with your friends, likely get greater savings and plan a group trip!

Bon voyage!

Master of Flight (Re)Search

ita softwareI'm a KAYAK girl. I've spent more time KAYAK-ing online than I have on water; in other words, my go-to search engine for flights (and sometimes hotels) is kayak.com. BUT, I recently found out that the software powering the travel search giant is available for public use AND Google just acquired them, much to Expedia's dismay.

Behind the Scenes ITA Software powers some of the biggest names in Travel: Bing, Air Canada, Hotwire, Virgin Atlantic, Orbitz, etc...  and the software behind these online search giants is also available to you, me and your grandma, through their Flight Matrix (pictured above). The matrix, not to be confused with the movie, provides a snazzy, simple and robust way to search for flights using the same tools you'd have access to if you were snooping around the back room at Bing Travel!

The Research Master Although using the site makes you feel travel agent-esque, it should be noted that the flight search capabilities ITA offers the public are research-driven versus transaction-driven. With ITA, you can only research the flight you want, after that, you must book it directly with the airline that best suits your needs (ie - price, airline alliance, times, direct vs multi-stop, etc...). When you find the flight you like, there's no direct link to the fare, so you need to make a note of the info, navigate to your airline of choice and go through the booking process until you find the flight ITA found for you. Even though this sounds cumbersome, some DIY travel aficionados never veer from searching with ITA first before booking their flight. You be the judge.

Trip Styler Tips Here are some best practices for using ITA combined with other travel tricks to book the best fare with the most points:

  • I like and will use this site for research purposes
  • When I've narrowed down my results: I'll opt for a carrier within the airline alliance where I collect miles
  • Once I know the flight I want: I'll book the flight on my Travel Credit Card's site to get extra travel points over and above the miles I'll get with my preferred airline alliance
