Travel Apps :: Fairmont

fairmont iphone appThose who peruse this blog more often than not know my love of Fairmont is fairly obvious, as is my healthy obsession with travel apps. So you can imagine my excitement upon learning that Fairmont Hotels & Resorts just launched their first iphone app! Finally! {For our third Travel Beauty Month contest, win some fab travel-sized Tarte products by engaging with our Facebook group.  Details Here. Contest ends this friday.}

Providing access to booking, reservations, hotel information, packages, destination recommendations, social sharing and President's Club (Fairmont's loyalty program); this app effectively, but not overwhelmingly, provides an easy way to plan, book and research your upcoming trip on-the-go.

Fairmont describes the app as a "concierge in your pocket." I couldn't agree more.

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts App Details

  • free
  • works with iPhone, iTouch and iPad.
  • according to their twitter account, Fairmont is looking into developing the app for Blackberry and Android which would be a smart move since I suspect most of their target market are Blackberry users. Just sayin'... For now, other smartphone users can peruse Fairmont's mobile site (which will display automatically when browsing Fairmont on a mobile)
  • uses GPS technology to learn about the area around your hotel (requires wifi or data plan)
  • upload photos you take to Fairmont's Everyone's an Original network
  • find restaurants, events, shopping and more
  • provides exact directions whether you’re walking or driving

Travel Apps :: Disneyland

disneyland mobile apps As mentioned in yesterday's post, I spent last Friday at Disneyland.  I didn't plan on playing make believe on my trip to Cali, but when the Park was only 20 mins from Newport, I felt I had to. Plus, I'd never seen the newish California Adventure Park nor the Bellagio-like World of Colour show. Disneyland Apps There are a lot of Disneyland apps you can pay for, but save your money, they aren't really worth it. Between the two apps below, plus Disney's mobile site, you're good to go. Just make sure your phone is fully charged!

Disneyland iGuide - Parktastiq Covering all the attractions and dining option in both parks, Parktastiq helps you make the most of your time at Walt's original playground with maps, park schedules and hours, ride statuses and wish/completed list. With all info organized in list form by park, then land, finding info is easy and quick. FREE

Disneyland California Mini Guide This map-based app includes Disney and California Adventure maps showing rides, attractions, restrooms and dining (with wait times) on the map. This app is best for a visual learner. Because it's kinda easy to get lost in Disneyland and California Adventure, having the option to consult the map on-demand is REALLY helpful. FREE

Mobile Sites Available on all smartphones, these multi-layered sites are helpful as far as timely and accurate info, but aren't downloadable so require multiple 'clicks' to get the info you need. Given Disney doesn't appear to have wifi, that's a lot of data roaming if you don't have a US data plan. m.disneyland.com

ps - if your smarphone's batteries get low, go old-school and grab a brochure with a map inside at the Park's entrance.

Travel Apps :: Ultraviolet Rays

UV appsEven though this is old news---like 20 years ago old news---it's still worth saying: as the ozone layer thins, sunscreen becomes soooooo much more important. When I was young I used to purposefully bake in the sun until I burned, but now I know better and have become a little sunscreen obsessed. If only I were that smart in my teens, I wouldn't have used the sun as my personal oven---on broil.

Knowing the sun's rays can be hurtful with prolonged exposure, weather networks have began highlighting the UV index. This international, standard measurement of how strong the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation is at a particular place, on a particular day, ranges from 0 (no danger to the average person) to 11+ (extreme risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure).

UV Apps Here are some apps that will tell you about the sun's fluctuating UV strength. Whether you use these apps at home or abroad, hopefully you'll use the indices to protect your skin versus bake sans sunscreen!

UV Detector This useful app lets you monitor the UV index in your city, as well as view weekly forecasts, receive customized alerts when you should wear sunscreen, and share these alerts with your friends through email, facebook, twitter and more. Works for most major cities worldwide.

The Weather Channel This app has all the bells and whistles of a regular weather app, as well as includes the UV index in its current forecast feature.

MyUVAlert™ Coppertone has developed an app aptly named MyUVAlert™ to help predict the level of sun protection needed. The only drawback?  It's only available for US destinations, and Canadians can't download it.

Travel Apps :: Wine Touring in BC

wine touring smartphone resources

During the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, Tourism BC launched a new app: Near Me BC.  I profiled the app at the time, but other than frequent visits to Whistler and a weekend in Vernon at Sparkling Hill Resort, I haven't needed to use the app much until this past weekend.  Prior to lounging in Kelowna for the long weekend, my husband and I spent Friday doing something that's been on our travel to do list for a long time: wine touring in BC! After Ontario, BC is Canada's second largest wine region, so we're attempting to chip away at wineries slowly---similar to how you'd drink an aged red:) With this in mind, we chose to start in the Naramata Bench near Penticton.

Since I'm a little travel app obsessed, here are some of tools to help navigate BC's wineries:

Near Me BC
Type: iPhone/iTouch/iPad app
Description: Use this app to plan your wine tour by selecting the area > attractions for a list of wineries.
Cost: Free

Wine Tripper BC
Type: iPhone/iTouch/iPad app
Description: Find wineries in the region you want to tour, view hours, make notes, mark favourites and more.
Cost: $2.99

Nat Decants
Type: iPhone/iTouch/iPad app, Blackberry, Android, Nokia
Description: The maven of wine has an app for that.  Search by country and area to view wineries, pairings, reviews and more.
Cost: Free

Google Maps
Type: website
Description: Here's a tip on how to use Google maps for wine touring: Enter in your location, then enter "wineries" and the map will show wineries in the region you initially searched.
Cost: Free

Travel Apps :: Air Canada

air canada mobile appIf the Air Canada app is good enough for the CEO of Gap Adventures, then it's good enough for you and me.  The young CEO figures he's travelled over a million miles since forming the adventure travel company in 1990, so you can imagine the time and paper savings an app like this provides. Although downloading this award-winning app seems like a no-brainer for anyone flying Canada's main legacy carrier, I am embarrassed to say that I didn't download it until recently.  Now I won't go back.  Why?  It lives up to what an app should be: an all-in-one solution and reason not to spend extra time dilly-dallying with check-in at the airport.

Air Canada App Details

  • free
  • works with iPhone, iTouch, iPad, Blackberry (no word yet on Android)
  • keep track of all your Air Canada flights from a single location
  • get flight notifications (that you have registered to) and links to your electronic boarding passes as they become available
  • check-in to select your seat
  • find and track any Air Canada or Jazz flight by flight number or arrival and destination cities
  • book a flights or rent a car through avis or budget
