Beach & Sun

ABCs

[trip style = beach + sun}

The ABCs: the first three letters in the alphabet, as well as a collection of the Caribbean's southernmost islands lucky enough to grow up in the right part of town, outside the hurricane belt. Formerly known as the Netherland Antilles, Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire are tight, sitting less than 46 miles apart at the longest distance and only 15 miles above the Northern tip of Venezuela, in South America.

As a quick intro, Aruba is the largest and most populated island with a hefty handful of hotels and resorts dotting the sandy shoreline. Curacao is where city and country life mingle and visitors can spend part of their time suiting up like a seal and diving right off the beach or just off-shore on the island's outer reaches, or eating well and exploring the shops in the Dutch colonial town of Willemstad. Bonaire is the smallest of the three islands primarily known for its diving and low-key accommodations.

Over the coming weeks I'm going to profile each of the ABC islands through destination Spotlight and Roam+Board features, but for now I wanted to give an overview since the ABCs seem to lose some much-deserved Caribbean clout in the shadow of the Bahamas, Jamaica and Dominican Republic!

{Trip Styler Tips :: you can drink the water on every island and USD are accepted everywhere, especially on Bonaire where it's now the official currency.}

Getting There & Inter-Island Major carriers like American Airlines, KLM and Air Canada {seasonal service} fly to Aruba, Curacao or Bonaire. Getting between the islands you might assume you can take a ferry, but you can only fly. Carriers like Insel Air and Dutch Antilles Express do the short island hops. Despite the less than 30-minute flights you'll still have to be at the airport up to 2 hours in advance!

Roam+Board :: Custom Hotel

[trip style = sun + budget conscious]

Please note: Monday is Canadian holiday, so we're taking the day off to celebrate Thanksgiving. We're back to biz on Tuesday, Oct 11th.

{I overnighted at this hotel last weekend after cruising from Vancouver to LA and before departing for Vancouver the next day. Members of the Trip Styler community often ask: what's a stylish hotel near Los Angeles International Airport? Ask and you shall receive; this installment Roam+Board answers that question!}

What Designed by the same architect as the LA's iconic Capitol Records building, The Custom Hotel is a recently refurbished, reasonably priced, mod hotel near LAX. In a sea of standard-issue airport hotels, I appreciate the Custom's Jet Age meets minimalist approach.

Where Los Angeles, CA: three minutes from LAX airport, 10 minutes from Venice Beach and 15 minutes from Santa Monica. Bonus: it's beside a Ralph's grocery store and 30 steps from a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf!

When LA is warm and sunny year-round. If you only have a day or two to explore the area and want to stay close to the airport, the Custom is a good launch point. Mid-week prices are 20-40% cheaper than weekend rates.

Who/Why For design-conscious folk who appreciate lemon water in the lobby; a pool with cabanas, cushy couches, cloth chairs and outdoor fire pits; a 60s-inspired open-air restaurant and basic rooms.

Cost Prices start around $97/night and include wifi, an airport shuttle, cardio and weight room.

LA In A Flash

[trip style = sun + urban + beach}

It all started with a canary yellow 2011 Camaro. The next 30 hours in LA blazed by at the speed of light, partly thanks to our rental car's 312 horsepower engine. In row K, stall number 871 we expected to find a Toyota Matrix, but instead there was a barely driven Camaro. I wasn't sure whether to be excited or horrified. Seriously, yellow? C'mon.

Trip Styler Tip :: Like airlines, many car rental agencies are moving towards self check-in terminals. It takes 5 minutes or less and you can avoid waiting in line!

With my iPhone stocked with TomTom's GPS app in one hand {my top travel app for US travel} and an envelope full of suggestions from Trip Styler contributors in the other, we set out to conquer corners of LA we'd never seen---a pretty easy task in a sprawling and coastal cool metropolis embracing the next trend like Kim Kardashian's latest paparazzi photo op.

First stop: Venice Beach

Heather, Trip Styler's Fashion Friday writer, told us that if we're staying at LAX {more on this in Friday's Roam+Board}, it was non-negotiable, we had to explore Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice and eat at Gjelina, a corner bistro too cool for a sign {pictured above}. Cruiser bikes were attached to every street pole, and home decor, vintage and minimalist boutiques and galleries lined the street; we came for bit and stayed for awhile. How could we not? Venice is part stroll-worthy and part beachy-keen. The closer to the beach we drove, the more hanging wetsuits and upright surfboards we saw on every balcony. And then, the pièce de résistance, the California sunset you dream of: beams of orange backlighting palm trees and lifeguard stations as if they'd been stamped on an image. Perfection.

Second stop: Silver Lake

Continuing the quest for quintessential LA before jetting back to Vancouver, we drove to Silver Lake based on a suggestion from Lauren, Trip Styler's Travel Beauty writer. After 30 minutes of weaving through six-lane interconnecting highways, we arrived at LAMILL. Sitting al fresco and staring at palm- and midcentury modern home-covered hills, I sipped a coffee topped with vanilla bean panna cotta and brunched on a gruyere, egg and bacon breakfast sandwich. The modern glam eatery is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner was busy every second. More than worth the drive from LAX!

Yes, the brighter than bright, yellow Camaro commanded attention---the kind we didn't want with people trying to race us at stop lights---but I realized it's LA, and everything commands attention. In retrospect, with only 30 hours, perhaps the flashy muscle car was the perfect method for muscling our way through LA traffic to explore the city in a flash.

Fashion Friday :: Romantic Caribbean

[trip style = beach + sun] Let me fill you in on a little secret about packing for a romantic Caribbean vacation: you don't need much {see: romantic + Caribbean}. Hey there overpackers - you really can travel with only carry-on luggage since the only items you'll be wearing are swimsuits and sarongs. And if you're like a friend of mine, who recently returned from a romantic Caribbean vacation with her husband, you don't need to worry about covering up much at all, because "when are you ever going to see these people again?" Wise words. Then again, don't think you won't be on display.

Several years ago, I travelled to the Dominican Republic with a group of 20 friends and family. There was a French couple at our resort, and we came to call the man "Hot Euro" for his, um, extreme hotness. Imagine you're laying out on the beach with your girlfriend and every time you look down the beach, 20 heads snap away. This was, of course, before I mastered the art of staring and not getting caught {the secret is to keep looking when your subject looks at you, as though you're staring at something just past them. This works especially well with sunglasses}.

Moral of the story? On a romantic vacation, who cares who's staring, they're probably just smitten with you. Unless of course you opted for beach braids. Then they're probably staring for another reason.

Now what to pack? Men (clockwise from top left) Orlebar Brown bulldog swim shorts, Penguin volley swim shorts, Costalots diego grey sunglasses, Soludos costa, Free Authority paper dress straw fedora

Women (from top centre) Zimmerman printed underwired bikini, Ray-Ban wayfarer acetate sunglasses, Topshop tie dye cover up, Norma Kamali walter mio ruched bandeau swimsuit, Pachacuti panama fedora, ASOS chiffon beach playsuit, ASOS fiji leather tie up sandals, Gregory Parkinson bag08, Target merona shirred 1-piece, ASOS floral beach dress, TM by Tara Matthews cheetah-print cotton sarong

{Trip Styler Tip: Two of my favourite online retailers have sunny vacation shops within their online shops: Net-A-Porter's Vacation Boutique and ASOS's Holiday Shop for Women & Men.}

Romantic Caribbean :: Wallet Friendly {2/2}

[trip style = budget conscious + beach + sun + cruise]

Yesterday we talked about our high-end hotel picks for romance in the Caribbean; think of these as a pair of red-soled Louboutins. Today we're taking it down a notch in price point, but not quality, with wallet-friendly escapes. Think of these as a comfortable, yet stylish pair of Cole Haans. Catch my stride?

{Trip Styler Tip: $1,000+/night rates don't necessarily indicate a hotel is that much nicer than a $250/night hotel. The lower price point could just mean the property is in an area with less cache or acclaim, a smaller marketing or PR budget, or a lack of direct airline routes.}

1} St. Lucia Ladera: Crowned by the Conde Nast Traveler Gold List 2010 + 2011, plus a ton of other major designations, this resort prides itself on three walls with an open air space to gaze at the view. Nine villas and 23 suites {many with their own plunge pools} are dotted throughout this rainforest retreat. Cost: from $480/night

2} Jamaica RockHouse: With facilities and villas connected by bridges and boardwalks, this boutique hotel and spa sits on the rocky cliffs of Negril. It's one of the Travel+Leisure editor’s fave hotels in the world, plus it has an award-winning restaurant. With thatched-roof villas and private sunbathing decks, privacy abounds. Has consistently won best boutique resort in the Caribbean for many years running. Cost: From $160/night

3} Virgin Gorda, BVI Bitter End Yacht Club: We featured this property in last week's Roam+Board, and wanted to mention it again for the romance factor. Yes, it allows kids, but if you go in the fall or late spring, you won't encounter the Spring Break rush, and can take advantage of off-peak prices. A garden room starts at $500, but that includes three meals per day for two. Cost: from $500/night

4} Turks and Caicos Parrot Cay: With a mile-long white powdery beach, this private island retreat draws those who really want to slip away in style. Case in point, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck got married here. Cost: from $450/night

5} Caribbean Cruise Mega ships that weave their way throughout the Caribbean Islands don't exactly create a secluded, romance-filled experience, but book a Caribbean itinerary with a smaller cruise line and you may find that romance you're seeking---and be able to visit multiple islands in one trip! Smaller cruise lines have the price tags to go with them, but if you search via VacationsToGo.com {click on the "90-day ticker" link for best deals} you can find reasonable rates on exceptional boutique lines like Silversea, Seabourn, Crystal, Windstar, Regent and Oceania.
