Travel Beauty :: Nicole's Picks

[trip style = any]

{Want more travel beauty? Get your fill the third Wednesday of every month. Lauren, our travel beauty expert, is already whipping up her next concoction post!}

This month we asked our very own Jetset Jingles editor, Nicole {pictured above in Dubai's Souk Madinat Jumeirah Market} about her travel beauty faves. Read about her exotic picks below!

TS: You're stranded on a deserted island and get to have one makeup product, one skincare product and one body care product with you---what would those be? Nicole: The one makeup product I can't leave home without is Lancome's Maquicomplet Concealer, which covers absolutely everything and is super creamy so your skin looks naturally smooth. Even on a desert island, I'd want to look that flawless! As far as a skincare product, I'd have to say my Phytomer Rosee Visage Cleansing Toner, which makes me feel so fresh and clean. My favorite everyday body care product is Aveeno Positively Nourishing Calming Body Lotion in Vanilla Chamomile---it's soothing for dry skin and has a very light scent.

TS: What is your travel beauty routine when flying? Nicole: I tend to not wear much makeup on flights and stick to a touch of Korres Zea Mays Blush in Peach, MAC Eyeshadow in Arena, Diorshow Mascara and Aveeno Essential Moisture Lip Conditioner with SPF 15. Each of those products are light, natural-looking and don't irritate my skin. I can't board a plane without a travel-sized hand lotion to keep my hands moisturized, and my favorite is L'Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream. I also need a bottle of water, and if it's a long flight, a sleep mask.

TS: When on vacation, what is your skincare and haircare routine? Nicole: I don't deviate from my normal skin and haircare routine, I just bring everything I need in smaller-sized, travel-friendly containers. I feel and look my best when I have everything with me that I usually use. I don't leave home without my Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel, Phytomer Toner, Dermalogica Solar Defense For Sensitive Skin with SPF 30 {for day} and Dermalogica Skin Smoothing Cream {for night}. I don't always love the brands of haircare that the hotels provide, so I take my Alterna Bamboo Shine On-The-Go Travel Kit.

TS: Any cool beauty purchases that you've discovered on your travels around the globe? Nicole: My sister spent her honeymoon in the Maldives and brought me back an incredible body lotion from the hotel spa {pictured above} called Angsana Pure Gold Body Lotion. It's lightweight with flecks of gold that add the perfect amount of shimmer. I love wearing it on a night out! I also love the Kajal Kohl Eyeliner I found in Dubai---it lasts longer than anything I've ever tried.

Travel Beauty :: Heather's Picks

[trip style = any]

{Want more travel beauty? Get your fill the third Wednesday of every month. Lauren, our travel beauty expert, is already whipping up her next concoction post!}

This month we asked our very own Fashion Friday editor about her travel beauty favorites. Check out what Heather has to say. We'll also be featuring other TS editors' preferred products in the coming months, so stay tuned.

What are your 3 favorite travel-friendly beauty products?
1/ I swear by a facial sunscreen that I heard about in a Trip Styler Travel Beauty post over a year ago: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid Daily Sun Protection SPF 55. I put it on before my make-up and reapply it throughout the day. This sunscreen protects my fairer than fair skin.

2/ Malin+Goetz makes a great travel kit that's both male and female friendly and includes sensitive-skin face cleanser, face moisturizer, shampoo, conditioner, body cleanser and body moisturizer.

3/ I love Giovanni's individually wrapped sanitizing towelettes. They have many uses while traveling, plus they smell fantastic. I love the mixed bag of grapefruit, peppermint and lavender towelettes. So refreshing!

{Heather's tip: As you sweat in the sweltering sun, your sunscreen has a tendency to trickle under your sunglasses and into your eyes. Ouch! Remember to keep it away from your eye area during application.}

What beauty routine do you follow while on vacation?
I'm a fan of the five-minute face. On a warm-weather vacation, I make it a three-minute face, always using SPF 30+ sunscreen as the base, followed by mineral powder. No need for primping your peepers, as they'll be covered by sunnies. I'm also a fan of the top knot and the scarf turban to keep my hair out of the way. On an urban or cold-weather vacation, a hat does wonders for frizzy or unwashed hair and a pulled-together look---applies to guys too!

{Heather's tip: Check out this simple how-to video on tying your own scarf turban.}

Do you do anything in flight to stay beautified?
On a long flight, just before descent, I always brush my teeth, spritz my face with Caudalie Beauty Elixir and apply lip gloss and Laura Mercier Translucent Mineral Powder to make me feel clean, refreshed and ready for public view. Plus a little blush and deodorant never did anyone any harm, right?

Travel Beauty :: Interview With Shaffali Skincare CEO

{Want more travel beauty? Get your fill the third Wednesday of every month. Lauren, our travel beauty expert, is already whipping up her next concoction post!}

I met Shaffali over 10 years ago in London, England when we both worked for Bliss Spa UK. She was this extremely ambitious, positive ball of energy that always dreamed of owning her own beauty business. It makes perfect sense that now, 10 years later, I am interviewing her for Trip Styler! Her company, Shaffali Skincare, is fantastic and her products are gorgeous, indulgent, and very efficacious.

Giveaway Shaffali is generously offering a travel set of her incredible products for a Trip Styler giveaway---make sure to enter as they are sure to become your absolute favorite.

  • How to enter: Comment on this post {below} and tell us where you'd take your Shaffali Skincare travel set.
  • Bonus entry: subscribe to Trip Styler's daily trip style tips via email {above, right}---and include a note about this in your comment.
  • Details: Open to residents of Canada and the USA. Entries will be accepted Jan 18 – 25, 2011. Winner chosen via random.org and announced Jan 26, and has two days, after prizing notification, to make contact.

What was the inspiration behind Shaffali? Shaffali Skincare is inspired by the Ayurvedic herbs and spices my mom taught me about as she passed her Indian traditions on to me when I was younger. My extensive travel inspired me to search for the finest aromatherapeutic essences from all over the world, including French lavender, Croatian sage, Italian orange blossom, and Egyptian geranium. The line is best experienced as a ritual, and involves meditation and positive mantras to help users connect to their inner selves.

What is special about the ingredients in Shaffali products? I started making products when I was a teenager because I wanted to keep my face glowing. With tons of self-study, experience working with a variety of products in world-class spas and experimenting with a lot of skincare recipes, I eventually refined my own formulations. The transition of making my own products in the kitchen to working with a lab and a team of scientists is both a passion and a process. For example, the Earth Mask took two years to refine to achieve the exact texture I wanted: smooth as velvet {or frosting} for easy-on and easy-off application.

How have your travels to India inspired Shaffali? My name as well as my skincare line is called Shaffali, an exotic and fragrant night blooming flower found in India. Ayurveda, yoga, and meditation are all part of India’s history, and not only am I drawn to each of them, but they are the foundation for my products.

What do you love most about India? I was born in India and moved to the US when I was young. The people in India are so full of life and love! The many temples and sanctuaries exemplify the act of stopping to give thanks and asking for guidance and blessings. This is a way of life. The Himalayas in the north are beautiful as are the deserts of Rajasthan. My experience having lived in an Ashram {pre Eat, Pray, Love} when I studied yoga and Ayurveda was refreshing for my soul to live so simply and peacefully.

What are the top three products on your packing list? I can't travel without Shaffali Exfoliant, Face Moisturizer and Body Moisturizer. I like to keep things basic. I also love Indian Kohl to define my eyes, and specifically use Lakme Kajal eyeliner. Also, I 'm obsessed with the most amazing scent I discovered at ABC Home {<---A Trip Styler fave!} in NYC: A Quiet Morning by Miller Et Bertaux. It is inspired by {you can guess} India, and made by a French design house.

Shaffali products can be purchased on www.shaffali.com. For international shipments, contact them for a shipping quote.

Jane Iredale Roses & Lollipops Lip Duo Locket for Breast Cancer Awareness, $30 nordstrom.com I'm a sucker for beauty product/accessory combos and this keychain locket is so adorable. The 2 chemical-free glosses are sheer and beautiful. Jane Iredale is giving an impressive 100% of proceeds to Living Beyond Breast Cancer.

Michael Kors Breast Cancer Awareness Perfume Gloss Rollerball, $18 beauty.com This fabulous 2-in-1 product combines Michael Kors' Very Hollywood fragrance (a blend of mandarin and gardenia) and a natural glossy lip tint. Travel Beauty :: Squeaky Clean

[trip style = trip style ]

{Editor's Note :: Congrats to Lauren, our Travel Beauty contributor who just had a baby boy! While Lauren's settling into motherhood and dreaming up her first family trip, I've rounded up a few ideas for jetsetting with a fresh and beautiful smile.}

Last weekend I did a trip style = weekend getaway trip in Seattle with 7 girls to celebrate a friend's birthday and do some power shopping. Aside from driving, eating and sleeping, we spent most of the weekend's waking hours in the shoe department of Nordstrom and at The Bellevue Collection. After shopping for nearly 8 hours and eating grab-and-go food, we were all c-r-a-v-i-n-g our toothbrushes! We'd remembered to bring them in our overnight bags, but not in our day bags.

Whether you're power shopping like us, sightseeing or on an all-night flight, one way to help you feel awake and clean is to sneak in a few teeth brushing sessions when you run to the loo. Believe me, your friends and seat mates will thank you!

With this in mind, here are a few ways to give your mouth a cinnamony or minty shower when you can't run back to your room to do a full brush:

On-The-Go Teeth Brushing Solutions 1. Travel toothbrush and toothpaste, from $2.00 2. denta*burst Brush And Go: textured teeth wipes, from $3.00 3. Colgate Wisp: portable mini brush {needs no water or toothpaste}, from $8.00 4. Pearly Wipes: textured teeth wipes and stain remover, from $7.00

{Trip Styler Tip :: If it's 11pm, you've already donned your robe and slippers and realize you've forgotten your toothbrush, call the front desk of your hotel and ask if they have any travel toothbrushes available. Most nicer hotels keep these items on-hand, but don't advertise it.}
