Travel Apps :: PageOnce Travel Tracking

page once mileage tracking softwarePageOnce is a do-it-all app business travelers depend on and leisure travelers revel in. Recommended by a host of publications from the NY Times to CNET, the largest mobile personal finance service in the US does everything from monitor credit card transactions and investment portfolios to track airline mileage. PageOnce is my mileage and hotel points tracking system. Even though I try to accumulate points with one airline alliance/hotel group, there are times when I have to veer off this path, making keeping track of multiple point structures daunting without a system. With points constantly expiring, I can't stress enough how important it is to have a mileage points manager if you like free travel!

For example, I have some points with One World airline alliance, but in order to use them for the flight I want to take to the ABC islands in low season {find out how get to the ABC islands for the same points usage as flying inter-US}, I need to make sure I donate points or take a flight to keep them active, so I can actually book that flight to Aruba, Curacao or Bonaire next fall.

Travel Apps :: 2010's Most Useful

2010's most useful travel appsIt's Travel App Tuesday, and since this is Trip Styler's first birthday {week}---which just so happens to coincide with the end of 2010---we're featuring the most useful globetrotting apps of the past year. Technology and travel aficionados know it's one thing to love the idea of an app, and another to actually use it. There are so many smart, intuitive and fun travel apps, but if you don't use them while actually traveling, what's the point?

Over the past year I've featured 50+ travel-related apps, from bathroom to boutique hotel finders. Apps are like items in your wardrobe; some are the essentials (or at least seem like it in this digital age) and some are the accessories. The accessory apps will differ for each person's unique trip styles, but the following "undergarment" apps provide a good baseline for weekend jaunts and international sé-jours.

Most Useful Apps in 2010 {Free} Kayak I'm already in love with Kayak's meta-search website (which made it onto my go-to 2010 travel website list), so of course I love their app too. Kayak's app isn't an afterthought---like many companies' apps---but rather a robust mobile tool that complements and enhances their web offering.

TripIt I don't leave for a trip without loading my itinerary seamlessly into this trusty app. Just forward your travel plans to an email address and the app will set up an itinerary for you, including your destination's weather and maps.

Skype I couldn't count the number of times I've used Skype to call business contacts, friends and family while jauntsetting. In Skype's infancy the call quality was undependable, but in the past few years it's become almost as clear as a land line. If you have a good wireless connection, Skype is your local or international calling card.

Frommer's Travel Tools Apps that perform several functions are where it's at. Frommer's all-in-one wonder features a multi-converter, tipping suggestion calculator, flashlight, self-populated packing list, travel trivia, city guides and postcard sharing.

Yelp This can-do app is the be-all-end-all of local information. Whether you're in Vancouver or Vienna, Yelp gives you insight into anything and everything nearby, either in a list or on a map. It also features user reviews and gives you the ability to add reviews. When I'm traveling, I use this app to find restaurants based on proximity, cuisine, hours and popularity. Use the sales and special offers section to find restaurant deals in your area.

Travel Apps :: SitOrSquat

Sit or Squat travel appWhen you gotta go, you gotta go! Now there's an app for that offering map and list-based info on the closest bathroom. The 99,000 worldwide listings are constantly growing given the app's user-generated content. Users can add new listings, review current restrooms and even see a picture of a salle de bain before deciding whether to SitOrSquat. Moms and dads, there's even a search function for bathrooms with changing tables. The fun doesn't stop here: for some bathrooms, you can even find out extra details like if there's condom- or lady product- dispensing machines.

This app works best in major cities like New York with lots of active bathroom users and reviewers. I tried this app for Vancouver and the results are decent. I'm looking forward to trying it out this coming weekend in Portland...if nature calls and there are no facilities in sight.

I like this app as a back-up plan. Being the world's ultimate bathroom finder is a tall order, but I salute the app's creators and Charmin---the app's sponsor, and not surprisingly a toilet paper company---for trying. Finally, if you're really in a #1 or #2 jam, you can text the word "sitorsquat" to DOTCOM (368266) and follow instructions to find the closest bathroom to you.

Travel Apps :: My TSA

My TSA travel appCan I bring batteries on a plane? Yes, 'dry' batteries are allowed in your checked or carry-on luggage. Can I bring a wrapped gift for the friend I'm visiting? No. How do I know the answers to these questions? ...By downloading the US Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) mobile app! Created to quickly and efficiently answer the TSA's 'regular' traveler questions, this app can tell you what you can and can't bring on board an airplane via lists or search, airport status', security wait times and a few travel tips to boot.

This app would have come in very handy last month when my husband and I arrived at the Seattle airport with minutes---okay seconds---to spare before boarding our flight to Maui for our Tropical {weekend} Experiment. Knowing the security line-up's wait time would have been a plus as far as whether to run or walk through the airport.

If you ever travel from, within or via a US airport, downloading this app is highly recommended. Also, many of the rules are similar in Canada, so it's also a great resource for flights within Canada as well as international travel.

Travel Apps :: Travel Yoga

travel yoga reviewFinding your zen while traveling just got a whole lot easier. This list of travel stretches for planes, trains and automobiles can be done discreetly while in aisle 3, seat 4, or in the comfort of your hotel room. No need to worry about doing downward dogs in the middle of the airport... All tied to a specific travel challenge, the 50+ yoga stretches help to ease the rigors of trip-ing abroad. For example, for terminal tranquility do the flight-got-bumped rag doll stretch, or the sitting-in-a-plane-seat crossed leg twist.

I don't normally like to pay for travel apps, but the stretching reminders and associated mental and physical benefits this app affords are worth it (to me) at $0.99.
