Travel Apps :: Take a Panorama

panorama iPhone appsIf a picture's worth a thousand words, then a panorama must be worth a sermon. With the iPhone's decent camera, and fewer people taking their cameras on vacation, a slew of panorama apps can help you take that extra special shot. Here are four prominent and talked-about panorama apps from $0 to $2.99. Panorama iPhone Apps

  • Panolab (free)
    • Is the free version the best version? Industry insiders vote no, but for a basic panorama stitch-up without many bells and whistles, free is always a great price.
  • AutoStitch Panorama ($2.99)
    • Based on the photo and tech blogs I read to research this post, people seem to be most partial to AutoStitch in comparison to the other payed apps because it's intuitive and doesn't require precision alignment.
  • 360Panorama ($2.99)
    • This recently updated app creates panoramas in real time versus needing to stitch them up later. The app's developer notes it works best for outdoor panoramas, so unless you're creating a virtual tour for your home, you're good to go!
  • Pano ($2.99)
    • Selected by Apple as one of the "best apps of 2009," Pano can take a panorama with a final resolution of up to 6800x800. Not too shabby for an iPhone.

Travel Apps :: Frommer's Travel Tools

frommers travel tools appI love all-in-one apps like Kayak that seem to do it all. Another all-in-oner is Frommer's Travel Tools app---of Frommer's Travel Guide Book Fame---combining a multi-function converter, flashlight, self-populated packing list, travel trivia, city guides and postcard sharing. But perhaps this intelligent app's piece de resistance is the tipping calculator allowing you to calculate a tip on any amount up to 25%, as well as split the tip up to 10 ways.  I love how the tipping guide goes a step beyond the math of tipping and provides info about each country's different practices, so you can travel (and tip) intelligently versus commit a foreign faux pas. Travel Apps :: TripCase

tripcase iphone appDeveloped by travel industry distribution giant Sabre, TripCase is a travel itinerary management tool much like the TripIt app we featured---and religiously use---in early June. Providing tools to centralize, manage and share travel plans over multiple suppliers and trips, this travel app helps you stay organized and up-to-date while getting from A to B. One great feature is the app's ability to pull every component of your trip---meetings, activities, restaurants, hotels and attractions alongside your flight, rail, ferry, cruise or ground transportation events---into a single itinerary creating a digital one-stop-shop planning reference while out of town.

TripCase App Details

Travel Apps :: Live Flight Tracker

flight trackerI've known about flight tracking apps for awhile, but never bothered to download one---why I don't know---because they can be extremely helpful. These apps are valuable planning and tracking tools, and definitely something the travel app-obsessed should have in their toolkits! Recently flight status apps came back on my radar when my mom asked about options as she filled her iTouch with apps the night before she set off for a multi-city, multi-segment trip to China. There are a few flight status apps on the market. The highest priced, FlightTrack ($9.99 Pro/$4.99 Regular) is the most robust and a frequent international traveller's dream come true. Casual jauntsetters will like the free FlightAware app.

FlightAware App Details

  • works with iPhone, iTouch, iPad; Blackberry and Android apps in the works
  • real-time flight status and tracking map for any flight in the United States, Canada or UK
