Cabin Fever

If you find yourself yearning for a life of simplicity, beauty and deeper harmony with nature, you might already be a fan of the popular website Cabin Porn. This curated collection of cabin images features everything from modern, minimalist abodes to dilapidated—but no less beautiful—shacks.

It's fitting that a website celebrating cabins built by hand, away from lives lived in the digital world, would transition to the physical world and birth a coffee table book filled with stories and images of cabins across the globe. These aren't your all-the-comforts-of-home-and-two-jet-skis vacation properties; these are simple, Scandinavian-style shelters for modern, would-be homesteaders.

"The story behind the book is worth repeating because it captures the essence of the movement, which mingles a hunger for the primitive with fashionable, Silicon-era savvy." — The New York Times

After purchasing 50 acres of forested land in upstate New York, tech entrepreneur Zach Klein {DIY.org, Vimeo, College Humor} began collecting images of cabins in a Tumblr blog while building on his property, Beaver Brook. That blog, Cabin Porn, caught on with like-minded dreamers. In the book's introduction, he writes: "I’d spent six years in the city building online communities, and now I wanted to build one offline. Specifically, a place for a bunch of friends to be outdoors, somewhere we could be less preoccupied by our professions and more reliant on each other.’"

Like a beautiful cookbook or $12 magazine, Cabin Porn begs to be browsed repeatedly on rainy afternoons, and may inspire mild flirtations with realtor websites, weekend drives down lakeside roads and an Airbnb wish list a mile long. Because if you can't build it yourself, you can still find beauty and simplicity on a weekend retreat in what others have created.

Jetset Style :: Crop It Like It's Hot

We know fall is around the corner when daylight hours dim, leaves crunch underfoot and sweaters come out of hiding. But when the temperature is too warm for wool and too cool for sandals, how should we dress? This year’s answer may shock you: Culottes.

No, this isn’t an 80s #tbt post—this cropped style is the trend of the year. Not quite pants and not quite shorts, culottes are often described by what they’re not. They also have several ridiculous names like gaucho, flood and palazzo pants. No matter what you call them, they’re comfortable and versatile, and they’ll be the perfect packing item for any fall escape.

Guys: While culottes are a major player in avant-garde men's fashion, they haven't hit the high street. GQ writes that men should wear trousers, jeans and chinos that fit slim through the leg and stop before hitting the top of their shoes. Ease into this shorter style with no-break pants or roll/cuff your longer pants. Feeling adventurous? Try jogger-cuff pants or culotte-style trousers.

Styling tips

• To lengthen the leg, pair with heels. A pointed or exposed toe will even further elongate your silhouette.
• This style also works well with sneakers, loafers and sandals for a more casual look.
• Seek out a high waistline to give the impression of even longer legs.
• Wear one color head to toe or try a jumpsuit paired with a leather or denim jacket for a sleek culottes-in-disguise look.
• Layer a sweater or graphic sweatshirt over a tank or tuck in a denim shirt or turtleneck in cooler climates.
• Throw a boyfriend-style or double-breasted blazer over a cropped shirt or tank.

Did you know? During the Victorian Era, women wore wide, skirt-like trousers for activities like horseback riding, cycling and tennis.

BC Wine Country Weekend

Home to over 100 wineries, BC's Okanagan Valley is a popular destination for western Canadians. Similar to Swiss wine, BC wine is still a relatively well-kept secret by a province that drinks nearly everything it produces. Why? You could blame our old-fashioned liquor laws, but I'd like to think that we drink it all because it's just that good.

Recently, the region has attracted more international attention from wine lovers and investors who heard it through the gravevine. Painted Rock's Red Icon blend sells for $55 at the winery, but in Shanghai goes for up to $500 in wine shops and $950 in restaurants. On a recent visit, I may have considered buying a few bottles, booking a trip to China and selling them to pay for my travels to the world's leading market for red wine.

The business of wine aside, BC's Okanagan is worth the trip to sip your way from Oliver to Lake Country on Pinot Gris, Merlot, Chardonnay, Cab Sauv, or one of the other 80+ grape varietals produced in the region. Because many wineries close up for the winter, early fall is a great time to visit. Not only will you sample some delicious wine without the crowds, you'll be right in the action during harvest season.

Trip Styler Tip: Wine tasting is haaaaard work, so don't forget to eat! Stop by Therapy Vineyards for a bite of wood-fired pizza from Howard at Lil's Kitchen, visit Poplar Grove's popular Vanilla Pod Restaurant, or grab some gorgeous cheese at Lock & Worth and hang out on a picnic bench overlooking Okanagan Lake.

This young, no-fuss winery is also home to Poplar Grove cheese, so your wine tasting comes paired with food. And really, what's better than wine & cheese? {Hint: Nothing}

This stunning, modern tasting room provides a beautiful setting for beautiful wine. Trust me—you'll want to spend an afternoon on the patio with a bottle of wine making all your friends jealous via Instagram.

Poplar Grove Winery, Naramata Bench
Wine pick: Viognier
More than just a gorgeous wine label and tasting room, this winery is home to a lovely restaurant and excellent wines, including my picks, Viognier and Merlot.

50th Parallel Estate Winery, Lake Country
Wine pick: Chardonnay
This is also a relatively new winery with an impressive industrial tasting room-meets-production-facility tucked away in Lake Country. Don't leave without a bottle of Chardonnay, Riesling and Rosé!

Linen is having a moment, fashion wise. Linen culottes, linen curtains, linen crop tops, linen cushions... The linen list goes on {and yes I said culottes—embrace them!}. My linen clothing collection has grown over the years, but those pieces rarely make their way into my suitcase because I've always thought of linen as the nemesis of carefree, carry-on travel. Who wants to spend their time away shackled to an iron—especially when they've only packed a handful of items?

Well, you can and should travel with linen, whether you choose to embrace or manage the wrinkles {with a few easy tricks listed below}. Linen is not only stylish, it's also a great fabric to keep you feeling fresh whether you're heading into the balmy tropics or the cooler fall months.

Did you know? Linen is made from the flax plant, which goes to show that flax is more than just a healthy source of omega-3, fiber and phytonutrients! It's also one of the oldest fabrics in the world, dating back as far as 36,000 years.

The benefits of linen

• Lightweight, breathable and comfortable
• Linen's natural fibers keep you cool in hot weather and won't cling to your body
• Dries quickly
• Provides UV protection and repels insects 
• Durable, long-lasting and holds up well to washing

How to pack linen

• Fold as little as possible
• Smooth out any wrinkles
• Lay at the top of your bag without over stuffing your luggage
• Remove linen garments from your luggage as soon as you arrive at your accommodation

How to keep linen wrinkle-free

• Pack a travel steamer in your luggage—they're about the size of a travel hairdryer {this one heats up in a minute}!
• Spritz your garment with water and blow dry while holding it taught
• Use a wrinkle-reducing spray 
• Hang your garment in the bathroom while you shower {leave the fan off}
• Smooth out any folds in the fabric while seated
• Opt for a linen-cotton blend instead of 100% linen
• Embrace the wrinkles!
